چکیده

Although it is possible to present XML Schema graphically, such representations do not raise the level of abstraction for XML schemata in the same way traditional conceptual models raise the level of abstraction for data schemata. Traditional conceptual models, on the other hand, do not accommodate several XML Schema structures. Thus, there is a need to enrich traditional conceptual models with new XML Schema features. After establishing criteria for XML conceptual modeling, we propose an enrichment to represent the XML features missing in traditional models. We argue that our solution can be adapted generally for traditional conceptual models and show how it can be adapted for two popular conceptual models.

Conceptual Design of XML Document Warehouses

EXtensible Markup Language (XML) has emerged as the dominant standard in describing and exchanging data among heterogeneous data sources. XML with its self-describing hierarchical structure and its associated XML Schema (XSD) provides the flexibility and the manipulative power needed to accommodate complex, disconnected, heterogeneous data. The issue of large volume of data appearing deserves i...

When Grammars do not Suffice: Data and Content Integrity Constraints Verification in XML through a Conceptual Model

Complex applications can benefit greatly from using conceptual models and Model Driven Architecture during development, deployment and runtime. XML applications are not different. In this paper, we examine the possibility of using Object Constraint Language (OCL) for expressing constraints over a conceptual model for XML data. We go through the different classes of OCL expression and show how e...

A Generic Representation for Exploiting Model-Based Information

There are a variety of ways to represent information and each representation scheme typically has associated tools to manipulate it. In this paper, we present a single, generic representation that can accommodate a broad range of information representation schemes (i.e., structural models), such as XML, RDF, Topic Maps, and various database models. We focus here on model-based information where...

Augmenting Traditional ER Method to Support Spatiotemporal Database Applications

In this paper, we present a new conceptual modeling tool, called STXER (SpatioTemporal eXtended Entity-Relationship), to support spatiotemporal database applications. STXER provides most functions for database conceptual modeling, such as graphical user interface, SQL script generation, XML schema definition, and commercial-DBMS-oriented database creation. Compared with previous tools, STXER is...

Mapping Conceptual Models to Database Schemas

The mapping of a conceptual-model instance to a database schema is fundamentally the same for all conceptual models. A conceptual-model instance describes the relationships and constraints among the various data items. Given the relationships and constraints, the mappings group data items together into flat relational schemas for relational databases and into nested relational schemas for objec...
